Screening of The Wife

Thursday, May 16

Lunch begins at 12:30 p.m. The program begins at 1:00 p.m.

After nearly forty years of marriage, Joan and Joe Castleman (Glenn Close
and Jonathan Pryce) are complements. Where Joe is vain, Joan is
self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American
Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy
into the private role of Great Man’s Wife. Joe is about to be awarded the
Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. The Wife
interweaves the story of a lifetime of shared compromises, secrets,
betrayals, and mutual love. Come see why Glen Close’s performance won rave
reviews!

Our programs are open to all CBI members and the general community.

By all means, bring friends!

Contact Lois Dyer at 973-533-1809 for details and to place your lunch order.

The cost is $10 for Adult Forum members & partners // $12 for community
participants

No charge if only attending program

Sunday, May 19 // 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.

EDGE (Eclectic Discussion Group Event) is CBI’s new informal discussion
group. These sessions draw upon the expertise, experience, and interests of
congregants to present programs on a variety of topics. Two topics will be
presented, with time for Q&A.

The Ethics of Physician Assisted Suicide

Presented by Marvin Fish

Physician assisted suicide must take into account autonomy, suicide, medical
ethics, the role of criminal law, discrimination, and economics. Also to be
considered are the history of autonomy, from the lessons of Exodus through
quests for freedom, into applications such as abortion, the charter of the
United Nations, and current issues such as Me Too and genetic engineering.
If suicide would be allowed, how should assisting it be wrong? Who is
included and who is excluded and what are the constitutional issues? What
interest and role might insurance play?

The Joys of Yiddish, Part 2

Presented by Lil Coopersmith

Yiddish is an evocative language of love, sadness, and Pastrami. For
example, in English horseradish is an uninspiring equine vegetable that
neighs. When uttered in Yiddish, the word brings tears and indigestion.
We’ll continue to explore more of the idiosyncrasies of this fascinating
language.

Refreshments will be served.
