MEET RABBI SHARON LITWIN

February 8-10

Kabbalat Shabbat – Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. **please note early start time**

Shabbat Services& Kiddush – Saturday morning starting at 9:00 a.m.

Mincha – Saturday afternoon at 4:15 p.m.

Seuda-Shlishit / Learning Session – Saturday afternoon at 4:45 p.m.followed by Ma’arriv& Havdalah

Rabbi Sharon Litwin has served as the Director of Congregational Learning at B’nai Israel since 2015. Previously, she served as Director of Education and Associate Rabbi at Temple Israel in Ridgewood, NJ, and as an instructor of rabbinics at Solomon Schechter School of Bergen County. She began her career as Rabbi of Shir Shalom in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. Rabbi Litwin writes that at the center of her rabbinate is the question, “What does it mean to be a liberal Jew in the 21st century?” Having grown up “Conservadox,” she migrated toward Reform Judaism while in college, and then back toward more traditional Judaism as an educator. She is passionate about exposing Jews with little familiarity with ritual to the beauty and deeper meanings of Judaism, and demonstrating its relevance to contemporary life. Rabbi Litwin earned her bachelor’s degree from Washington University (St. Louis) in Near East studies and English, and her rabbinic ordination from Hebrew Union College in 2002. She was a fellow with Rabbis Without Borders in 2017-2018. Rabbi Litwin is a triathlete and sings alto with Tavim. She lives in New Jersey with her daughter, Abby, a high school freshman, and is an avid New York Rangers fan.

CBI Chanting Circle

Sephardic & Mizrachi Melody Jam

Sunday, February 17 at 5:00 p.m.

Join us in the Chapel for our inspirational Hebrew chant and song circle with musical accompaniment. This special edition of the chanting circle is going south of the border – the Ashkenazi border, that is! We will be learning centuries-old melodies from Spain, Portugal and the Sephardic Diaspora along with melodies from Iraq, Persia, Yemen, and India. Some are done in a traditional call-and-response style, while others will be done as a nigun, or put to words you may know.

The intention of chanting is to awaken the divine in our hearts. It can soothe the mind and at the very least is simply fun to do! No prior knowledge of Hebrew or singing ability necessary…only a willingness to join in spiritual community.

Speaker Joe Rapaport

Thursday, February 21

Lunch begins at 12:30 p.m. The program begins at 1:00 p.m.

Come learn from Hirschhorn speaker Joe Rapaport as he discusses How the Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara Led to the fall of the Papal State. The treatment of a young Jewish boy, forcibly raised as a Christian in 19thcentury Italy creates a furor that pits the Papacy itself against forces of democracy and Italian unification. Hear about the ramifications of this true story!

Our programs are open to all CBI members and the general community.

By all means, bring friends!

Contact Lois Dyer at 973-533-1809 for details and to place your lunch order.

The cost is $10 for Adult Forum members & partners // $12 for community participants
